The complex also hosts the Sphinx, a limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human, believed to guard the Giza Plateau. Its mystery and grandeur draw millions of visitors, making it a symbol of Egypt's ancient prowess The Giza town itself is very crowded. One of the most densely populated places on earth. You can feel the hustle as you walk on the street but everyone is very friendly, sometimes over friendly to sell you something but its all in good jest. The Museum of Ancient Egypt is a wonder in itself and not to be missed. It was one of the highlights of our entire trip. Stay - Mena House Nestled in the shadow of these ancient wonders, the Mena House Hotel offers a unique blend of modern luxury and historical legacy. With rooms offering direct views of the pyramids, it's a place where you can wake up to the sight of a world that has stood the test of time. Highly recommended. Luxor: The Valley of Kings and Majestic Temples Luxor, often called the world's greatest open-air museum, houses the Valley of the Kings, where tombs of pharaohs such as Tutankhamun lie. The Karnak Temple, another highlight, is a vast complex that was developed over more than 2,000 years. It's dedicated to the Theban gods and is a marvel of religious architecture. The Luxor Temple, with its grand statues and columns, illuminates the city's historical significance, serving as a beacon of ancient Egyptian civilization. As you travel south from Cairo, you will notice the scenery changing quite a lot. Cities down south are more greener and beautiful. Life moves at a much slower pace. I know pyramids are the showstopper but I was very impressed with the valley of the kings. When you take a look at the catacombs that were built in the mountains and then hidden with mountains to fool the grave robbers, it blows your mind. Stay - The Sheraton Luxor Resort Its a good budget friendly option with stunning views of the Nile, offering a perfect balance of exploration and relaxation. It's an ideal base for venturing into Luxor's historical heart, ensuring a comfortable retreat after a day of discovery Aswan: The Gateway to African History Aswan, with its unique Nubian culture, is a blend of history and beauty. The Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, showcases classic Egyptian architecture on an island in the Nile. The Unfinished Obelisk in the ancient quarry provides insight into the stone-cutting techniques of ancient Egyptians, while the Aswan High Dam highlights modern engineering achievements. The main highlight of Aswan lies beyond Aswan in a place called Abu Simbel. Your option for travel is by road from Aswan, which will take approx. 3-4 hours each way or do what we did and take a flight. There are daily flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel and back. You can go int he morning and be back by afternoon flight. Just need 2-3 hours. The temples of Abu Simbel, carved out of a mountainside by Pharaoh Ramses II, are a monumental achievement in ancient Egyptian architecture. The larger temple is dedicated to Ramses himself, and its inner sanctum is designed to light up only twice a year, on the dates of his birth and coronation. This engineering marvel, combined with the massive relocation effort in the 1960s to save it from flooding, makes Abu Simbel a must-visit for its historical and architectural significance Stay - MovenPick Aswan Resort Situated on Elephantine Island, the Movenpick Resort Aswan offers panoramic views of the Nile in a setting that combines modern comforts with Nubian hospitality. Its location and the view is unbeatable. There is a small inconvinience of having to use a boat for transfer from and to the hotel but the view is well worth this small inconvinience. Dining must try's Giza - Khufu’s restaurant offers a dining experience with a view of the pyramids, while The Moghul Room at Mena House is renowned for its Indian cuisine, providing a rich culinary journey amidst the backdrop of ancient history Luxor - El Tarboush for the best Lebanese and Egyptian food in all of Egypt. and The Thai restaurnat which is was fabous for Asian food. Aswan - Mezze restaurant @MovenPick resort. Tasty Egyptian cuisine. Cairo - itouni, located within the Four Seasons Hotel. This restaurant offers a taste of authentic Egyptian cuisine with a modern twist, set against the Nile's enchanting backdrop Shopping - Shop for intricate lanterns, Aromatic spices, Nubian Handicrafts, Alabaster and Stone pieces Shop at - Khan El Khalili Market in Cairo, once of the largest local market. In Luxor, Souk streets and Luxor market to buy local craft. In Aswan, shop for fresh local spices in one of the many shops spread across the city. Tips for Travelers Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to explore Egypt is from October to April, when the weather is milder. Guides : For a place like this guides are highly recommended. You will be missing a lot of history without someone explaining it. Cultural Sensitivity: Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites, and be mindful of local customs to show respect. Currency : Egypt has the most innovative currency conversion. All the ATM's in the country operate as standalone currency converters, just use any ATM, offer your country's currency (all major currencies accepted) and get the local Egyptian currency instantly. Chillis Restaurant offered a more casual vibe, perfect for enjoying a relaxed evening with friends. However, the highlight was La Palapa Restaurant. Dining right on the beach, with the sound of waves accompanying a delicious meal, was an unforgettable experience. The coconut shrimp and the lobster tacos were exceptional. The Serene Casa Velas Hotel Our stay at Casa Velas Hotel added a layer of luxury to our trip. This adults-only boutique hotel is a sanctuary of peace and elegance. The attention to detail in their service, the beautifully landscaped gardens, and the exquisite cuisine at their on-site restaurant made our stay delightful. Evening Entertainment at Casa Velas It is a nice all inclusive hotel. You can take the full package that includes the F&B but for me it was not that impressive. I would much rather take just the rooms and have the flexibility of eating outside in various different restaurants vs being restricted to only the restaurants in the hotel. I took the F&B package but did not use it much. Quick Tips 1. With its dramatic landscapes, pristine lakes, and majestic peaks, it’s no wonder that it captures the hearts of those who visit. During my recent trip to this beautiful national park, I not only had the opportunity to explore some of the most stunning spots in Canada but also indulged in some of the best culinary experiences the area has to offer. One cannot visit Banff without being charmed by the spectacular beauty of Lake Louise. With its turquoise waters reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks, it’s a sight to behold and a fantastic spot for both relaxation and activities like canoeing. Sure, the ethereal beauty of Lake Louise is no secret, but the park’s vastness is home to several other gems. Moraine Lake: Set in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, Moraine Lake's azure waters and the backdrop of snow-draped mountains is a scene straight out of a postcard. If you're up for a challenge, the hike to the top of the Rockpile offers an unparalleled view of the lake. Bow Falls: Just a short distance from the town of Banff, the roar of Bow Falls is both majestic and soothing. It's a serene spot to take in the raw power of nature. Icefields Parkway: Dubbed as one of the most scenic drives in the world, this highway is a journey through the heart of the Rockies, with jaw-dropping vistas at every turn. Stops like Peyto Lake and the Columbia Icefield make it even more enchanting. Peyto Lake, with its distinct wolf-head shape, is a glacial gem set amidst the Rockies in Banff National Park. The catwalks built into the limestone cliffs offer a unique perspective of the canyon The Banff Gondola is another must-do, taking visitors atop Sulphur Mountain for panoramic views of the Bow Valley. A walk on the boardwalk at the summit is a bonus, offering breathtaking sights in all directions. FOOD Banff isn’t just about natural beauty. It's also home to some exceptional restaurants that will make your taste buds sing. At the top of our culinary experiences was Eden at Rimrock Hotel. This luxurious dining spot is an ode to fine dining, with exquisite dishes and an extensive wine list. The ambiance is unmatched, making it an ideal place for a romantic dinner or a special occasion. For those in love with flavors south of the border, Anejo Mexican Restaurant won’t disappoint. Their guacamole, prepared right at your table, and their vast selection of tequilas made for a memorable evening. For a touch of spice and everything nice, Saffron Indian Bistro was our go-to. The rich flavors, aromatic spices, and the warmth of their hospitality made it a meal to remember. Last but not least, the Rundle Bar at Fairmont was the perfect place to unwind. With its classy interior, wide range of cocktails, and a view that's to die for, it’s a must-visit when in Banff. Staying at The Rimrock Hotel Our home during this trip was the splendid Rimrock Hotel. Overlooking the Sulphur Mountain, this hotel is a blend of luxury and comfort. The rooms were spacious, the staff attentive, and the overall experience? Absolutely delightful! Helpful Hints for Future Travelers - Wildlife: While the sight of wildlife is thrilling, remember to maintain a safe distance. Never feed or approach them, as this is their home, and we are mere visitors. - Popular places like Louise and Morraine dont have parking space. Your best bet is to drive there at 6 AM or use public transportation. I would recommend the latter as there are multiple options and you don't need to wake up at 4 to reach there. - If hiking, start early to avoid afternoon crowds and to get the best light for photos. - Be sure to book accommodations well in advance, especially during peak seasons. - IF flying in, take a car from the Calgary airport. Remember to book in advance for peak season as it will be tricky to get it after you land - Banff and Jasper are 2 hours from each other. If you want to explore Jasper and nearby attractions properly then plan atleast 2 night at Jasper. Hotels there are much cheaper than Banff - While Banff is beautiful year-round, I found that visiting during the shoulder seasons (May and September) was ideal. More than the destinations themselves the fun of a cruise is enhanced due to the ship and this one does not disappoint. It is bit of a splurge but well worth it.

Last year, I had the privilege of embarking on a memorable journey, tracing the footprints of ancient civilizations, reveling in the bustling energy of the capital city, and experiencing the serene beauty of the Andes mountains. The cities of Lima, Cusco, and the archaeological wonder that is Machu Picchu, stand out in my memory as captivating points of interest. My journey began in Lima, the pulsating heart of Peru, a city that beautifully blends the modern and the historic. The cityscape is a tapestry of stunning colonial architecture, vibrant markets, and lively neighborhoods. A highlight of my time in Lima was my visit to the Museo Larco. Nestled in a 18th century vice-royal building, the museum boasts a staggering collection of pre-Columbian art and artifacts, a testament to the rich tapestry of Peru's ancient cultures. Exploring the galleries, I was immersed in the intricate pottery, textiles, and jewelry, each artifact telling a story of a civilization that thrived thousands of years ago. The Barranco neighborhood was another standout in Lima. Known for its bohemian atmosphere, Barranco is a hotbed of creativity, lined with colorful murals, intriguing street art, and artistic studios. As I wandered through the winding streets, I felt a sense of connection with the vibrant spirit of the city. The neighborhood is also a gastronomic hub, with a myriad of restaurants serving traditional and fusion cuisines. Lima, as I discovered, is a haven for food lovers. My taste buds reveled in traditional dishes like ceviche, a refreshing seafood dish marinated in citrus juices, and ají de gallina, a creamy chicken dish spiced with the distinctive ají amarillo. I also sampled international cuisine that has been tastefully reimagined with a Peruvian twist. From Lima, my journey took me to Cusco, the once capital of the vast Inca Empire. Cusco is a city where time seems to have stopped, its cobblestone streets echoing tales of a rich and complex history. The cityscape is adorned with colonial-era architecture, ancient ruins, and impressive cathedrals. The Cusco Cathedral, with its ornate carvings and valuable artworks, was particularly memorable. A short distance from the city, I visited the Sacsayhuaman fortress. Constructed with mammoth stones, the fortress overlooks the city and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Andes. In Cusco, I also enjoyed local dishes such as lomo saltado, a delicious stir-fry combining beef, onions, tomatoes, and fried potatoes, and papa a la huancaína, a mouthwatering dish of boiled potatoes in a spicy, creamy sauce. The climax of my journey was, without a doubt, the visit to Machu Picchu. Often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu is an architectural marvel, perched high above the Urubamba River valley. As I navigated the ancient stone paths, I found myself captivated by the meticulously constructed terraces, temples, and astronomical observatories. The tranquility of the site, coupled with the stunning backdrop of lush greenery and cloud-wreathed peaks, was an awe-inspiring experience. Shopping in Peru was an adventure in itself. I marveled at the craftsmanship of the artisanal goods, the intricate hand-woven textiles, delicate pottery, and exquisite jewelry. In Lima, I explored the upscale Larcomar shopping center, while in Cusco, the San Pedro Market was a treasure trove of traditional crafts. A beautiful woven bag from Machu Picchu, crafted by local artisans, is a cherished memento of my trip. The quality of my trip was greatly enhanced by the accommodations. In Urubamba, I stayed at the Tambo Del Inka Hotel. With its luxurious interiors and panoramic views of the Andes, it was a perfect sanctuary to unwind after a day of exploration. In Machu Picchu, the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Hotel offered a tranquil retreat nestled in the heart of the Andes. My stay in Lima was at the Hilton hotel, a beacon of comfort and convenience located within easy access of key tourist attractions. The best time to visit Peru is at the end of the rainy season and just before the start of the tourist season. I would say the end of March or 1st week of April is ideal. The almost end of rainy season means greenery everywhere and especially in Machu Picchu to get picture perfect views. Ohh and dont forget to try this beer if you are in Machu Picchu. Thank me later.
